The vessel of repurposing a landscape experience. Seducing and devouring, it is as if she is an archaeologist, excavating through the paint. Breaking down the surface and into the depth of memories that fathom below and becoming lost in a reflective moment. It is as if her works are exploding like a phoenix rebirth screeching from the fires beneath, that singe across the panels. Raw, tactile and vulnerable emotion that creates the desire to just stay, feel and observe.

Korynn Morrison is a contemporary artist that has become her own therapist of artistic expression developing her skill set through the National Art School, in Sydney, Australia. There is pressure for many young creatives in their early years to "find" their creative voice. 

Morrison soon realized that this voice was not out there to be found, but was rather a constant nudge from within, woven into every aspect of her creative growth. Morrison found a way to process her voice.

The process was originally very traditional oil and cold wax. Cold wax uses a variety of layering and solvent reduction forming many unexpected moments of magic from beneath the surface.

The studio became her therapy, where the thinking became the system of creation. It first became triggered in the late evening when she came to look at the collection of oil and wax panels and realised that a feeling of escape was oozing from each of her paintings, it was at this moment that the next part of her practice began to form. Taking the sanding tool she needed to shift the tension that was bound up within the paintings, and by doing so revolutionised a new and innovative excavation process.

The process becomes the phoenix of creation. These paintings she now calls “Excavated Landscapes”.

The hands-on experience of sanding is a very tactile motion to which point she is guided by instinct. Following from a desired focal point and moving outwards she becomes an Archeologist in excavating the paint back down to the skeleton that originally inspired the design with a different vision taking centre stage. There is no way to control when sanding where there may be more or less to fade and each decision she makes is permanent. She is not striving for each work to be perfect but rather to become the perfect imperfection, she lets the pieces live and breathe as they are completed.

At first glance, it almost appears that the works are photo media and it's not until closer inspection that it is painting in a new aesthetic. What becomes more interesting upon the unique experience she creates relates to the lessons we so distinctly remember is ‘Do Not Touch The Art’. Morrison on the other hand invites the audience to break out of this restriction and touch the panel, allowing the voyeur to become entranced with what the adventurous colours are stirring within you and then begin to understand that the painting is not as textured as it appears, rather a smooth surface that truly evolves and unravels itself the closer you get.

When you think about art's place in this world, it is in the thousands of tiny moments of introspective pause where we become wild in silence. Her paintings encapsulate this engagement within a busy world that is so driven by the need to move. Morrison’s purpose is to create an immersive experience that allows the viewer to take a moment of pause as if she has caught a memory and repurposed the thought to the panel.

As a lover of sunsets and afternoon light, looking at “All Wild In Silence” it brings me back to the memories and feelings, nostalgic with time on road trips through the mountains with family and friends over the years. To consider that with what we have had from the restrictions of COVID-19, the memory is still there but now in physical reality that feeds our heartfelt moments with the changing soundtracks we have playing and just do what we all struggle to find these days and just think and let go.
